Rebekah, Rachel, and Sarah Rust
Rachel, Rebekah and Sarah Rust, the Rust Sisters, are a
dynamic creative force exploring the world of story telling
through digital technology. Though interested in video
production and animation for the past several years, these
three teenage girls became active over one year ago when
they were chosen as interns to work with John Lemmon, of
John Lemmon Films, to help usher in a new blue screen, video
production and animation facility at a new joint
theatre/library called ImaginOn that opened in Charlotte,
North Carolina in 2005. Through teaching, managing and
creating projects with and for the library patrons, the Rust
Sisters honed their skills and acquired diverse experience
producing animated and live action shorts, and music videos.
When not working with the public they pursued the creation
of their own projects, including a state and national award
winning animated short "Troy Story", which was loosely based
on the Iliad, and a Film Noir style public service
announcement TV commercial for the Collaborative Summer
Library Program for the Teen Summer Reading Program
campaign. Rachel Rust, 17, wrote the script, did the audio
editing, and scored the music for the public service
announcement. Her sister Rebekah Rust, 15, coordinated the
project with Michele Gorman, Teen Services Supervisor at
Imaginon. Rebekah also managed the production of the
project, directed the actors and worked with her sister on
editing, filming and casting the spot. They also generated a
30 second radio spot, comic book page and web page using
images taken by the youngest sister, Sarah Rust, 13. Sarah
also assisted in filming, lighting and special effects for
the commercial. They shot the 30 second commercial using the
library's video cameras and edited the project using Apple's
Final Cut Pro. The music was scored on Apple's garageband
along with the radio spot. A script was written in Quartz
Composer to apply the stylistic graphic effect for one
version of the commercial. When they are not working on art
projects, volunteering their time at ImaginOn and promoting
the classics for the Junior Classical League, they are
pursuing their classical education and being teenagers.
